Why Aeration is Important for Dams:
Aeration is one of the most universally beneficial management options for improving water quality and conditions in a dam. Dam aerators distribute fine bubbles of air through air diffusers, which cycles deeper layers of water, and dissolves oxygen into the water body. Dissolved oxygen and a healthy circulation of water are important for natural processes and microbial activity that support the health of a waterbody, and develop a natural and self-sustaining ecosystem capable of supporting fish, crustaceans, aquatic plants and waterbirds.
Key Benefits:
- Increases dissolved oxygen (DO)
- Improves water clarity
- Reduces fish kills
- Prevents thermal stratification
- Minimises odour and algae growth
Installation:Â
This Dam Aerator Kit includes a subsurface dam bed air diffuser station and 30m of weighted airline. Subsurface aeration is most effective for deeper dams (>2.5m), pumping air to the bottom of the dam to enable complete circulation, and breaking up stratified layers of water. The diffuser station should be placed in the deepest part of the dam, ideally centred where possible, with 30m of weighted airline included in this kit allowing for easy positioning.
The compressor included in this kit is a 1/4HP rocking piston compressor, which runs off mains power. It also includes a base plate with 4 mounting points, and included rubber feet, allowing installation in cabinets, sheds, onto concrete slabs, or wherever is convenient. Running off mains power ensures installation is easy and won’t require specific experience in electrics, and can usually be completed in 1 day. The included air station may require anchoring depending on the positioning, but comes with attachment point on a base plate for weights or ties.
Below is a diagram for the major benefits of aeration, and a general visual guide for how the system works.
Capacity and Specifications:
The included 1/4HP compressor is suitable for effective aeration of dams at ~1/2 acre in surface area. A deeper dam allows air to diffuse over a wider area, whereas a shallower and broad dam may require more air stations for better circulation. More kits are available at 1/2 and 3/4HP, with 2-3 air stations where requirements are higher for aeration, see Dam Aerator Kits 2 and 3, or the Dam Aerator King Kit which includes a lockable cabinet.
